Question by Andy: How long does it take for a regional pilot to build up the necessary 4-5000 hours to apply to a major airline?

I am planning to finish my bachelor's degree and upon graduation- enroll in flight school.
Once completed with flight school, i intend to work as a flight instructor to build up to the 1000 hour mark to apply to a regional airline.

I understand that major airlines require 4000-5000 hours for any applying pilot.

My question is-
How long would would I have to work at a regional airline before I have enough hours to apply to a major airline?

The requirements of the majors change from "warm blood in veins" to 10K hours, 3 moon landings, and a degree in aeronautical engineering depending on the supply and demand. More typical is around 2500 hours and 1000 PIC jet.

Depending on the flight school, a CFI should fly anywhere from 40-100 hours a month. On average, especially in this economy, unless you get with a really blowing and going school, I'd guess around 8 months to a year. Probably a little longer. More importantly, you have to find a way to build ME time, and depending on the school, that can happen in little time, or it can take years.

A regional pilot on reserve (very junior) may fly only 30 or 40 hours a month. Once you are senior enough to hold a line, then you should build around 70-80 hours a month. Again, more importantly, is the PIC time, and for that you will probably be an FO anywhere from 2 years to 5 or more years. So the reality is that you will be with a regional, assuming that you select the correct one, for 4-8 or even 10 years.

A few years ago, when everyone was hiring like crazy, a person could solo, and within 1 year at a flight school such as ATP, first as a student, then as an instructor (almost all multiengine training), go to a regional. After a couple of years there, they could upgrade to Captain, and after a couple of more years move to a major. Those days will probably come back again, but the ,000 question is when. I believe that there will be a some minor hiring starting next year, with a real binge somewhere around 2012. Of course this assumes that we don't manage to completely tank the economy.

I forget which one, but I just heard that one of the regionals is accepting resumes for hiring that is to start early 2010. Fact or fiction, I don't know.
